The National Meteorological Center on Sunday issued a warning about a powerful tropical storm named “Shakti” rapidly approaching Yemeni territorial waters from the northern Arabian Sea, with forecasts of heavy thunderstorms and severe sea turbulence.
In its statement, the center said the storm is currently about 210 kilometers off Yemen’s eastern coast and is moving quickly toward territorial waters, posing imminent weather threats to the country’s eastern governorates in the coming hours.
It predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in the governorates of Al-Mahra, Hadramout, and Shabwa, as well as severe sea conditions and high waves along the eastern coastline. The center urged fishermen and vessel operators to avoid sailing in the affected areas during this period.
The Meteorological Center also called on local authorities and emergency services to take necessary precautions and prepare for possible developments associated with the storm, which could trigger flash floods and cause material damage in low-lying and coastal areas.
