The Executive Office of the Nasserist Unionist People’s Organization in Taiz has strongly condemned the worsening security chaos in the governorate, the latest manifestation of which was the assassination of Iftihan Al-Mashhari, Director General of the Cleaning and Improvement Fund, on Thursday, September 18. The party accused armed gangs—many of whose members are affiliated with military brigades and security units—of carrying out the killing.
In a statement, the party denounced the gangs for engaging in murder, looting, extortion, and terrorizing residents in their homes and on public streets. It stressed that insecurity has plagued Taiz for years, fueled by the negligence and complicity of security and military institutions, which in some cases even provide protection to perpetrators instead of holding them accountable.
The statement noted that Al-Mashhari’s assassination cannot be treated as just another crime in the long chain of violence in Taiz. Alongside prior incidents—including the threats against her, the recent attempted assassination of Dr. Azeeza Sharaf and her daughter, and the shooting of passing vehicles on Jabal Habashi road that injured two women—the killing signals a dangerous new wave of crimes targeting both women and men alike.
The Nasserist office said the silence of local authorities, security institutions, and the national leadership in the face of these crimes is unacceptable. It urged political parties, civic groups, and the local community to break their silence, warning that persistent lawlessness threatens social cohesion and endangers civil peace across the governorate.
The statement also condemned the storming of the home of Dr. Sadiq Al-Shumeiri, Vice President of Taiz University, and the abduction and severe beating of his son, in addition to earlier violent incidents in the city.
The Nasserist organization called on the Presidential Leadership Council and state authorities to rescue Taiz from the grip of criminal elements that have undermined its security for years. It demanded urgent action to arrest perpetrators, hold negligent or complicit commanders accountable, and restore law and order, holding the top leadership fully responsible before the people of Taiz for the ongoing crimes and their consequences.
