France Officially Recognizes State of Palestine

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that France has officially recognized the State of Palestine, during his address at the high-level international conference on resolving the Palestinian issue and implementing the two-state solution, held in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“We can no longer wait to recognize the State of Palestine,” Macron declared. “We collectively bear responsibility for our failure so far to build a just peace in the Middle East.”

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud emphasized that the two-state solution conference represents a “historic opportunity for peace,” urging the international community to take the historic step of recognizing Palestine in light of ongoing “Israeli crimes and violations in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem.”

The conference, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, comes amid a wave of international recognitions of the Palestinian state. On Sunday, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal formally announced their recognition, with at least ten more countries expected to follow suit during the summit.
