On UNGA Sidelines: Al-Alimi Holds Series of Meetings with World Leaders in New York

Chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, held a series of meetings with international leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, focusing on bilateral relations and regional and global developments. He was accompanied by council members Aidarous Al-Zubaidi and Dr. Abdullah Al-Alimi.

Al-Alimi began his meetings with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, discussing developments in both countries and prospects for strengthening historic ties, while affirming support for Syria’s unity and sovereignty.

In another engagement, he met Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, congratulating Latvia on securing a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for the 2026–2027 term and affirming Yemen’s support for its role in advancing democracy and human rights. The talks also touched on international coordination to confront the Iran-backed Houthi group.

Al-Alimi also met Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, reviewing avenues of cooperation and Cairo’s continued support for Yemen, particularly in education, health, and services for displaced populations.

In talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the discussions centered on maritime security and protecting shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, as well as preventing arms smuggling to the Houthis and halting child recruitment.

On the economic front, Al-Alimi met with Igor Salazar, Deputy Executive Director of U.S.-based Hunt Oil Company, to discuss the company’s plans in the oil and gas sector and the possibility of resuming operations in Yemen. The Yemeni government, he assured, is ready to provide all necessary facilities to support these efforts.
