Dutch shipping company Spliethoff has announced the death of one of its crew members from injuries sustained during a Houthi attack on its vessel MV Minerva Graecia off the coast of Yemen late last month.
Company spokesperson Hansje Damen Verkade said in a press statement: “It is with deep sadness and regret that we mourn the loss of one of our crew members, who passed away in hospital from severe injuries sustained during the attack on our vessel in the Gulf of Aden on September 29.”
He added that the company continues to provide support to the victim’s family, noting that another injured crew member remains under medical observation in Djibouti. “His condition is stable, and he is expected to return home later this week,” he said.
The Dutch-flagged vessel Minerva Graecia was attacked off Yemen’s coast, resulting in injuries to two crew members and causing material damage to the ship. All 19 crew members were evacuated following the incident.
The Houthi group claimed responsibility for the attack, accusing the shipping company of violating the ban on docking at Israeli ports.
In response, the Netherlands called on the European Union to impose sanctions on the Houthis and to designate the group as a terrorist organization after it claimed responsibility for targeting the Minerva Graecia with a cruise missile in the Gulf of Aden.
